Here is a new Link Dress 2 in almost white PEARL (Pure white causes lots of color problems in SL) so you can go behave like a Devil, while looking like an Angel.

We got a lot of requests for this but we hand paint everything and I wanted to make sure it was just right. Submitted for your approval, and available in the main store..

(Oh btw… the stain on the hip is NOT a stain! This fabric is metallic and it’s a reflection! All painted to make it look real, just like a metallic dress in RL would.)

I have a minor obsession with shopping and visit art galleries in larger cities. (Someone I know very well said it was the understatement of the year…) But I love to take a stroll down the streets and have a look at shop windows to see how they have decorated to get the clothes to look their best. I also love to sit in front of a painting or a sculpture and just think about how the artist was thinking when He/She created it.

I have been thinking a lot about fashion in general lately. I was reading a blog the other day and this blogger had a strong opinion about fashion not being art. She said fashion is fashion and art is art. She also said there is a huge difference and that anyone that really have seen any kind of art and compared those or even had a thought it’s on the same page is an imbecile. Why she was thinking like this didn’t really come up to the surface.

I had to think… Is fashion art? Can art be made into fashion? Does it have anything at all to do with each other? Can one be influenced by the other? Music and fashion definitely are… So if music and fashion goes hand in hand then why can’t fashion and art? How did this subject get into her head in the first place? For me it was obvious! Of course fashion is art! When I look at a dress, RL or SL, and know how much work that’s behind it and all the sketches it took to get it right or how it, just like a painting, comes to life in the mind, heart and dreams of the designer I cant but help thinking… FASHION IS ART!!! And that is my opinion.

So let’s say for a second that fashion is art… another question. Can you compare RL fashion to SL fashion? I mean… in SL you can wear clothes and things not possible in RL. Like our wonderful Link dress 2 for example. I know for sure my tits wouldn’t stay behind this fabric! If it could be made in RL (or is it already?) would it stand a chance at the New York fashion Week? I have no idea. In august I’m attending the Stockholm Fashion Week. Then I will try to see if there is anything like the Link cocktail dress and if there is… I WILL BUY IT!!

I can’t remember how many times Jeela said “It didn’t look like this in Photoshop…”

I think it's time that you see an example of what she means.

Everytime you change a picture and save it as a .jpeg some pixels are taken away or how I shall explain it. So imagine this… Jeela made the left side with no distortion. I got it, had to make some changes before I saved it at least 2 times to get it like this. In between we lost some pixels’ in the process. Now… if you don’t have a graphic card like Jeela does in her Mac… well I sure don’t… then think how she sees this everytime she downloads some clothing into Second Life.

Jeela told me she tried to make the stones in this dress look like plastic. I think it looks like the Lapis Lazuli. Imagine some golden strokes and this dress is worth a fortune!

I had a dream a few nights ago that I was in a Dancesport competition... the pro ballroom dancing world... all these fantastic clothes they wear swirling around the bright lights of the dance floor...

I woke up and started in painting around 6am... by 4pm I had the majority of this Nightsong Latin Dress completed. Added matching gloves and a few more strands of pearls on the hip, tested the skirt flow and tweaked the flexi settings for more elegance while dancing and voila.

From what I understand, there will be an entire suite of Latin dresses. Here is the first one and Jeela called it Nightsong. For me this dress represents the element of water. I see it floating around my legs and make me feel like I’m in the flow and winning the competition!!

HOLOGRAM BIKINI by Yeti Voom

Some weeks ago I sat with my darling by the sea on the rocks, one of the first warm days of spring in Sweden, when he asked me if I ever thought of SL things IRL. “What do you mean?” I said. “You of all know how much I think about Boingo and all things I have to do in SL when I get home from RL work.” This was not what he meant at all. “No, I mean… do you ever wish you could fly or put an AO on or do you ever wake up and get confused when you are not in your house at Voomderland?” he said. I had to think for a few minutes meantime I zipped on my coffee and rolled my hair between my fingers and then I answered… “No, not anymore but in the beginning about 2 years ago I did a lot. I kind of mixed the worlds up a bit”

I got a mail from an SL friend where he told me that one day when he was talking to his boss in her office he suddenly found himself walking around in her room just like his avatar does! He laughed!! And all of you who have seen the AO from AKEYO know what I mean.

Do we really get into our roles as the avatars so much that we become like them?
There is a saying in SL that SL is SL and RL is RL. Now is that really so? Do you ever mix the worlds? Or look for the pink/blue ball before you sit or go to bed? Hahaha…

I never got that far but what I do miss in RL is my huge inventory!!! Just think about all the clothes I got from Boingo. Not to mention all the skins!! All 342 of them or do we have more? Just click on pink lips and I’m ready to go. Or my favourite…ANU Mithrill!! I wish Jeela could make that in our natural series with the small beauty mark.

Well summer is just around the corner, at least on the north hemisphere, and soon it will be time for Beach 2009! Then I wish I had the Boingo HOLOGRAM BIKINI! Hmmm… what to wear at the beach today? The red one? But… the blue one is great and the black shows my butt best and the violet is cool with this sun tan and the white is glowing in the sun and… and… and… Nahhh, I’ll take the orange one to show off!!! Anyhow… the small strings won’t leave these gross white marks on my body cos they are so thin. Ohhhh… just think about all these contests I’m going to win in RL!! Bummer… SL I mean!!

SHEER THRILLS DRESS by Yeti Voom

In one of our regular Tuesday meetings Jeela told me she made a dress. I called it sheer thrills dress she said and put it on. Yep! It was really sheer and amazing!

One thing I learned these past years in SL and with Jeela is how different we see things her and me. It could be culture, our family values or just something else I really don’t know. But when it comes to nudity she is really American and I am really Swedish. To be really honest I might be a bit more open minded than Swedes are generally and Jeela is more open minded than most Americans. Jeela even laughs and say “You are sooo Swedish Yeti!” when we speak about these things. Where I think, hey lets make it skimpier, she holds back and then sometimes it’s just the opposite. In a country where so many movies are made with nude scenes, and “little brother Sweden” follows the great US, you think you should meet a lot of free thinkers about nudity… no? Jeela is not prude but she has to explain to me from time to time how the Americans think. Does it sound like the Swedes are running naked on the streets all the time? We are certainly not but in a way maybe not as prude as other parts of the world.

I can see all the IM’s I’m going to get now from people in SL. LOL
Well it’s my experience… RIGHT?

We talked about if we needed this dress in variants of translucency and decided to make 4 different dresses. For those who like it really sheer but don’t dare to wear it with nothing underneath Jeela made a gorgeous bra and panties and she also made stockings. All the details that look like lace is hand painted. Yes every single little dot. No photos here! She also made it tintable and modifiable so you can change it over and over in any colour you like for the evening. Pst… wanna know a secret?? The darker you make it the more sheer it gets!

I personally like the white solid with the bra, panties, gloves and stockings. It makes me think of a wedding underneath the cherry trees in full bloom a warm evening in the sunset. But… all sheer in black with nothing underneath in a hot steamy club at 3 pm is cool too.

As usual I went out in SL to see if I got any reaction on this dress and I can tell you I did! I was wearing the white dress not too sheer and with the underwear. Some of you think I got reactions from men huh? Not in this case. This was a totally unexpected reaction from my side. LOL! I’m not going to tell you where I was but I can tell you I was in a store. I knew what I came for and went straight in to grab what I needed. When I came there I said Hi to the shop assistant. It’s important for me to do that. So many days I have been standing at Boingo rearranging things or adding a vendor with my tag on and people come in and don’t even say hi. How hard can it be?

Well I got in said Hi and went for the things. The girl was very kind to me and talked in open chat. Suddenly I got an IM from her. She told me I looked lovely in my… hmmm… underwear… but asked me to think about the other customers and then kindly asked me to put clothes on. I must have sounded like a nutcase when I answered her. “Its not underwear it’s a dress”. Then I started laughing in front of my computer. I didn’t laugh at her but at my own reaction. What Jeela and I discussed was a dress. It never struck my mind it looked like I was out shopping only in my underwear! I grabbed the stuff, apologized, gave her an LM to our store and left. I still haven’t even told Jeela about this cos I felt like a fool. I never see my avatar Yeti as myself, I mean as the woman behind Yeti. For me Yeti is pixels and only that and I am never shy or embarrassed even if Yeti naked. She is my creation and I only use her as a tool in SL and in her you meet my personality. But I see it as a compliment that Jeela made such great skins it looks real even if she didn’t use any photos but hand painted it all from scratch.

If you want to use this dress as a petticoat, bustier or chemise under your evening gown please do. It comes in all layers.

Jeela wanted to make hoods for Boingo in our leather style and was looking for a sculptor to make it for us. We wanted a really good one that kept the same quality as Jeela’s creations so she sent her sketches to a few ppl and we were hoping for someone to help us out.

We didn’t speak about them for a while and one day she said… “I found the sculptor for the hoods, JanderSunStar Vendetta and Kallisti Burns at Discord Designs are going to make the hair to go with it”. I was thrilled and wanted to see them as soon as they were done.

I liked them the second I saw them! Yeti has rather large breasts so to fit the hair I had to move the hood forward and then I saw the edge of the hood. Jeela said she had a little something for that and told me to wait ‘til they were finished. So we discussed textures instead and Jeela had an idea about blending the midnight and the burnt textures on the hoods. I thought she was joking at first but the more she spoke about it I realized she wasn’t. I don’t think they match and in my eyes that looked… not so good. Jeela was sad and mumbled about how much she worked so they would fit together. I told her to do both so ppl could choose. “That would be an awful bunch of vendors in the stores”, Jeela said and so the hoods were only made in one texture each.

I have tried to get used to it and in this blog I am mixing them. I am glad to be proven wrong so if you find it irresistible I’m sure Jeela will make a special hood just for you!

Kallisti made 5 great different hair styles in so many different colours. If you click on the hood you will get a menu for resizing and textures for the hair. I also know that you can buy these hair styles at Discord Design if you want to wear them without the hood.

BUCCANEER LEGGINGS AND LEATHER SHORTS by Yeti Voom

I have been trying to get Jeela to make me a skirt forever! She refuses ‘til SL gets a better shape for skirts and I can definitely understand her. Who wants a butt that looks like a continent? She made some tries with prims and so on and it turned out pretty good but we haven’t got any in our stores yet. So when I started to talk about a burnt leather skirt she just sighed. I pushed her ‘cos Boingo need a skirt to go with all this leather. We talked about putting it on a jacket layer so it followed the body lines better. She came back to me the day after with a skirt so short we just laughed both of us. Trial and error… back to the drawing tablet again. Without another word she just sent me the ad and then came the folder with the Buccaneer leggings in ALL layers (even as stockings) and a version of the original skirt as burnt leather shorts.

As usual I try everything on the male shapes we have. I think it works and let the pictures speak for themselves.

BURNT LEATHER VEST by Yeti Voom

The time had come… I had been waiting for almost 2 years and now it was finally time to go. We had been talking about it many times and it felt so strange but there I was, calling Jeela to say… “Guess what I got in my hand?” Jeela was busy with making something in Photoshop and I said “Concentrate! You know this”. She stopped for a second and then said… “Sounds like paper… Hmmm… OMG!!! IT’S A PLANE TICKET!!!!!” Yes! I held the ticket for San Francisco in my hand. I was going to meet Jeela in RL!

I think I walked all over SF! My eyes rolled in my head every evening when I went to bed. I really wanted to see how Jeela did when she made our clothes and I was looking for something special to show her that she could make as a memory from this trip. I can’t do sketches so I had to find something that I could photograph. One day I found these boots. Jeela knows how much I hate leopard texture! Only women over 40 wear it in Sweden. We call them “The Jurassic league”! Hahaha! Yes I know I’m 43 and?

Well one rainy day we strolled up on Haight Ashbury. I wanted to see the old hippie district and I can tell you I wasn’t disappointed. I wanted to buy a t-shirt with a psychedelic rainbow like batik pattern and my hubby looked at me and said “When are you going to use that… IN SWEDEN?” He was right of cos so I put it back and swore to buy a touristic t-shirt at the airport with a huge printing of San Francisco, for him! We passed many stores and suddenly there it was the new Boingo vest. I immediately saw this in our burnt leather and how good Yeti would look in it. I took a picture and hoped Jeela would like it too.

Later that evening I told her how much I wanted to see her work and showed her the vest. She liked it and after dinner we started. She opened a template, put the texture on and there it was. She made a dark line here and a brighter there and made some clicking and then we had a trim and wrinkles. Then she started on the cool patterns and seams. She opened another window and started making the back. Finally I could see and ask all those questions I wanted to ask for months. She drew some lines and then some more and when I thought we were done she added even more and it looked better and better for every little dot she added. When she was happy I asked her for the buttons. “Oh I forgot those” she said. She made a circle and filled it with bronze, put a dark colour on and finished with a white line. She put it on the vest and it looked like it had been there for ages. “We need a press stud” (is this the proper word for it?) “I never made one before” she said. I called my hubby to come and look and he was just as surprised as I was. How could some dots and lines be a button? I looked at her and my eyes were filled with tears when I gently took her hand and kissed it, afraid to hurt her tool. For the first time I really understood what an amazing gift she has and how blessed I am to work with such an artist.

So for all of you who buy this… This vest has a story and it’s mine and Jeela’s gift for you from our first meeting in RL. It’s made out of an amazing journey towards a very special friendship. We hope you like it as much as we do!

LEATHER TOPS by Yeti Voom

I don’t know what came first. Was it the egg or was it the hen? In this case the shrug-style jacket or the bra. I have a vague memory of Jeela making a black studded bra a long time ago and I have it in my inventory in the Boingo folder so it must be a creation of Jeela. But... did I also see her making a jacket this style too? I really can’t remember. What I do remember is her making this sculpted collar and almost going nuts over all the details not going in the right spot when the texture is added to the collar in SL.

Jeela usually sends me the raw sketches of everything she makes and we talk about the details and stuff. She always has a clear vision of what she wants to create and I can hang along and enjoy. Of ‘cos we listen to each others advice and the result are always to our satisfaction.

This time we thought of something to go along with the pants. You can’t wear the apron all the time although it’s cool. What would women want to go with it? Maybe some tiny silk blouse to create a fashionable contrast between the rough leather and a sheer fabric? Or a huge woolen sweater in autumn colors? Jeela said… “Give me a few hours and I’ll get to it.” After two hours she called me… “Yeti Voom, see the new Boingo burnt jacket and studded bra!” COOL! We looked at our avatars and turned and looked again and discussed if it needed something more. Jeela made all the studs in steel and I thought they would look better with the midnight leather stuff so she went off into Photoshop making them look like bronze while I was singing Swedish kindergarten songs to give her some inspiration. I mean, I know how much she likes the Caramel song so… Next time I will use my H2Zoom to record and podcast so you all can enjoy.
This jacket comes in all layers and the bra also. You can attach the collar on both spine and chest if you want to wear some necklace or other stuff. If you buy this or already have… don’t forget to look at the details. The studs, the buckle and the strings in the back but most important… Jeela never let a thing off her drawing tablet before the seams on all clothes matches. I’d love to show you some day if it was possible how much energy and love she puts into this work so all of you will look fabulicious!

While I was shooting the picks for this blog I was thinking about a jacket for men in this leather style. We often hear and we also experience the lack of men’s wear and Jeela and I always talk about how to improve this at Boingo. So I simply put on the Oden shape and the Boingo skin for men (no its not in the store yet) and tried on the jacket along with the pants and the white drowned t-shirt. I think it looks great and I know some men bought it already so why not try it? Jace, Zac, Lasse, Saren, Sev, Arn and Andy and the rest of you guys in the Boingo group, IM me and tell me what you would like to see and we will give it a try.

So to answer my own question… I still have no clue about the egg and the hen but who cares? Have a nice Easter!!!

MIDNIGHT LEATHER PANTS by Yeti Voom

Late one cold Swedish winter night (around noon SLT) we sat in a meeting as usual talking about how to move on with Boingo. Did we need more bikinis ‘cos ppl started asking for them again or should we make another linked dress, a white one? We went off in dreams and talked about everything in, under and above the Multiverse.

Jeela and I often dance during our meetings and we try to go to different places every time, mostly ‘cos we don’t like the same kind of music (and then I got to have Spotify on) but also to show our great creations. This evening was no exception. We were in an awesome club, can’t remember where now, when Jeela said “Why not make a version of the leather pants? I have the texture and it will be easy for me to change the colour. Just as she said this Spotify started playing a song called “Five minutes to midnight” by BoysLikeGirls. I looked at my watch, it was 5 minutes to midnight and I told Jeela about the coincidence. It was almost like a "Jung moment" in synchronicities’ and she stopped talking… “Let’s call the new pants Midnight Leather and make them midnight blue” she said.

Well you guys… Here’s the Midnight Leather.

BURNT LEATHER PANTS by Yeti Voom

Jeela and I loved the apron and ppl started buying it but many asked what to wear with it. One very hot chick IM:d me and said “ You don’t expect me to go naked under this do you?” Actually Jeela and I were wearing nothing but this apron and cool boots. I started using jeans and a t-shirt underneath but I loved it the way it was also. We started talking about pants. Jeela already had an idea for pants and asked what I thought about it. When Jeela made the Gladiator pants for men we didn’t think about tattoos and only made them with one leg bare. My brother Andreaus Beck told us that not all tattoos come for both legs. We learned from that and Jeela started working. She went on for days in Photoshop ’til she was satisfied.

When Jeela works I’m doing other stuff and don’t bother her ‘til she comes out of the “Photoshop cave”. I usually get an email with a whole story about all she did and still have to do and on and on… We meet every Tuesday at 10 am SLT and then I ask her about every detail, how she was thinking and we discuss a lot. I love to hear how she was thinking when she made this and that. How she came up with the idea for a leather belt with a buckle and why a seam there and how did you do to make it shine just on top of that…. I think we both like these sessions ‘cos it’s a reminder for her and I am learning and we develop more ideas and go on to the next project.

The one thing I love the most about Jeela’s stuff is all the details. She put such an effort in to every single tiny little detail. Often she is devastated when the SL viewer doesn’t even show half of all the work she put into it. I think her most used expression when we work is: “It didn’t look like that in Photoshop…” and then she sends me the targa file. I also like how she can make any butt look so squeezable! She gave the word Bootylicious a face… or butts rather. LOL

BURNT LEATHER by Yeti Voom

Our latest series of clothing are called Burnt Leather.

It all started one day when Jeela called me and told me she made a new texture. ”You have to see this! It’s more than 50 layers!” she said, all excited. Now I don’t remember if she said it was 50 layers or if it’s just what it felt like to me when she started explaining about them all, but I just loved it!

My favorite materials in RL are leather, rusty steel, wood, concrete and stones from the sea. And this texture had the feeling of all of that. ”You see I made some scratches here and this is a rusty thing and… and… and…” She talked so warmly about it and I totally fell in love in what she had done. “So Jeela”, I asked, “How are we going to use this?” And in a second this master mind had a 100 ideas about what to do with it. When she told me all the ideas she realized I was overwhelmed (as usual because my mind is not working like that at all) so she said “Ok Yeti… Why don’t we start with the leather apron?” And so we did!

I really love to see how Jeela works. She has a mind of a genius when it comes to different ideas and ways to change SL or as she says… The Multiverse!

So keep up Multiversers!!!

Here you see Thor in his blacksmith outfit in a smithy in Sweden. For all of you that thought that Thor was just the God of Thunder, I’m sorry to disappoint you. This poor but hot God has to earn his living just like the rest of us! His thick gloves protects him from the fire and but also from the cold snowy winds when he rides his wagon over the midnight skies. He hammers his anvil and sometimes he sends out a thunderbolt!

Here’s a little get-together for the Gods of Asgård right before the MIDWINTER blot. Thor invited Odin, Freya and Embla. They are all shapes from the Boingo shape collection and will soon be for sale in a store near you.

Take my life, please! (Theft in Second Life)

There's a woman I met a couple months ago in Second Life who struck me as a true example of someone trying to own her life and live it richly. She is divorced and has a daughter who has leukemia. So in order to be with her daughter at home and still put food on the table she dove into Second Life and started a business selling clothes.

This she does full-time and has been able to build her business over the last 8 months to where it just pays the RL bills with a little left over.

Last month she discovered her creations being sold in a freebie market by SL thieves.

Last week as Yeti and I were setting up the vendors in a brand new store we were made aware by one of our beloved customers that thieves have come to our door as well. In-game and on SLX you can find bikinis that are pixel for pixel the same as ours with someone else's name on them.

I've read the forum posts about this expanding issue. I've read blogs, and JIRA files, and listened to dozens of people who paint the same dark picture of the gradual erosion of trust in SL. Particularly troubling is Linden Labs silence. I get the sense they are frozen. In the face of an important decision they have locked up.

What I want to speak about is what comes to me when I sit quietly, watching this drama unfold, and I peek beneath the surface. Where does this have its roots.

I remember listening to my animation students bragging occasionally about software they'd gotten for free from friends or wares sites. As young artists they still didn't make the connection that the programmers that made that software might care about getting paid as much as the student would want to be paid for their animations.

What happens, when a creator DOESN'T get paid? I know a few things that DON'T happen. They don't eat, they don't have the quality of life every human wants, they don't feel valued, they don't want to create anymore.

And what about you, the THIEF? Do you know what's really happening here? You've been given a chance to live a life on this Earth that is all about YOU and the amazing person that you are... you have skills and thoughts and dreams that all the rest of us would benefit from... but what are you doing instead... pissing away your every breath in these childish attempts at seeing what you can get away with. If your parents gave you this mindset of scarcity then you need to be responsible and get counseling to undo it. Right now you are asking total strangers to pay for your insecurities and the day is coming when they are going to stop paying. Eventually we ALL HAVE TO WORK OUT OR OWN SHIT. No one escapes their own issues forever. So why not deal with it now and have the rest of your life to wake up proud of who you are each morning.

Meantime, set up a mall with profit-sharing scripts so you let people who create take half of their sales and you take the other half in place of rent... sharing... what a concept. I do it with one mall and it works just fine.

Thieves... you have options that will not end each day with "criminal" in your tag. And if you wont consider the ugliness that results from what you are doing, then consider simply how people feel about who you are.

I cant believe you wouldn't rather be my friend than my enemy.

Thoughts on virtual worlds: The evolution of the Avatar

The AVATAR is the fundamental element of a virtual world. Any environment that doesn't anchor a users identity to it will ultimately not anchor the user's interest. And when users are transitory there is no chance for community. You end up with virtual ghost towns.

The Avatar is the next evolution of the email address.

Email began in earnest with college usage as the universities were the first to have an internal internet structure, handed down from the military which created the first email protocols.

Email has now become the icon of digital identities... we are known more for our email address than our physical address... and our real location in the world at any given moment is now unimportant because our point of contact, email address, obeys very few boundaries.

Add to this the penchant for us to always try to expand our ability to be in-touch with other people and you have the birth of virtual environments like Second Life.* Virtual environments are the expression of us reaching for each other. If I know there are people in Sweden... then I WANT to know them! Not just talk to them but live with them... and if I can do that with my butt in a chair in Colorado...

I remember the early days of 3D software... watching NASA animations of what it might look like if a probe cruised over the surface of Mars. And the first thought I had was... I want to walk there. It wasn't enough to take a remote tour. I had to go there and stake out a spot of my own and go exploring. I can't get past the fact that, in my experience as a person, worlds are not about worlds, they are about ME in worlds.

So in virtual worlds it is always about the avatar. And recent years in virtual worlds have shown that by far the most tweaked, played-with, modified, upgraded, ... loved... thing in any virtual world is the user's avatar. It's our new point of contact in virtual worlds... can talk, walk, drink, dance and graced with scripting can dance and make love to other avatars in a remote imitation of our intimate real-world moments.

How then is the avatar going to evolve? We know it will, as we expand everything we can.

Work is already being done to brainstorm a set of standards that will allow avatars to cross the boundaries of virtual worlds. I can see a future where virtual environments will avoid the horrendous weight of trying to be all things to all people... they will specialize... universities will collaborate on funding educational environments designed to deliver high-levels of interaction and experiential learning at the expense of creating living spaces for avatars and businesses. Sports advocates will collaborate on fast-reaction-time worlds with hard-coded environments to make racing and sports simulation a possibility. Their constructs will forego the ability for individuals to customize anything but their avatars or vehicles so the response times of races can be video-game crisp.

And the broad-stroke environments like Second Life will have link nodes around the world for avatars to teleport to these specialized worlds for much higher-quality experiences. Racing and education and other specialized tasks will fade to a great degree from the social worlds and the social worlds will learn to specialize themselves... becoming ideally suited to personalized living spaces, and community-building.

But avatars themselves are always and ever the hub of all things and so they are destined to replace email as the icon of personal identity. In fact email will become a channel attached to the avatar, as well as websites, blogs, personal (secure) data... we'll do banking in virtual worlds... the first real use of video in our phones is likely to be the voice-directed lip-sync'd image of our avatars rather than our real faces. We love contact... but we also really love anonymity!

Because the software isn't here yet it's sometimes hard to picture but our 3D avatar is going to be an ever-present entity on our computer screens in the next decade. As easy to use as email is now and able to go places email never could. You think YouTube changed the face of film in the world... wait till serialized videos are produced by highly organized groups using only their avatars as actors. Code-writers will be rock stars in the coming decades. And so will personality.

In this new age, society has little tolerance for negativity or boredom. Now that your fantastic genetic curves are no longer your stock in trade your mind is going to need to be sharp to play with the big boys. Sharp, and gracious. Manners in virtual environments count as priceless where traditional boundaries don't exist and anonymity does. One foul-mouth comment and not only are you muted by the one you offended but what you said is now on the screens of 7 of their other friends. Or 700! A harsh introduction to the power of virtual groups.

We would do well to brace ourselves for a fairly dramatic shift in the way we think about our place in the world. Are you really as isolated as you think? Not for long you're not.

* Some would argue that MySpace and Facebook are also virtual environments because they are hubs for digital communities but I would counter that they are better defined as CHANNELS. They DO grow in complexity and can expand the ways in which people communicate in them but, in a web-based environment, eventually the expansions of features become so hard to use that those features will never become ubiquitous. There's only so many ways you can upgrade a car before it has to become an airplane. :)

The origin of the Boingo name

Someone recently asked me where I got the idea for the name Boingo. Well...

When I was little, maybe 5 or 6, I had this weird Uncle Roger who would always be off traveling somewhere then he'd show up at our house totally unexpected. Uncle Roger did everything different and one oddity about him was his choice of pets... Uncle Roger had a pet Gibbon (go ahead, google it, it's a monkey.) The Gibbon's name... was Boingo!

So while Uncle Roger was visiting Boingo would jump around exploring the house and we could usually tell where he was by the noise of things falling off tables and shelves. Then there would be silence. You'd hardly notice it at first until the silence went too long and it always was MY job to go find what Boingo had gotten into.

[Can I just say here that you'd think monkey's would be great fun but truth is they get annoying fast. They pull your hair, they never obey, and even when they are small they are BADASS strong! Do not stick your fingers in their face to see what they'll do. They'll TAKE your finger is what they'll do.]

Eventually I discovered Boingo had a favorite hiding place and my searches for him were brief. I found him sitting in a pile of clothes deep in my closet. (I don't leave my clothes in piles, I use hangers. The pile was Boingo's inspiration.) So this cheeky little gibbon would be sitting in there and he'd stare up at me like I'd caught him on the toilet... just squirming in the clothes and licking his lips.

Another possible reason I called the store Boingo is that it's an easy name to spell and to remember, but that's not nearly as fun as a monkey story now is it!

Boingo Blog Begins

The time has come to expand consciousness. With minimal screaming and birth pains the Boingo Blog is born today... which gives me a way to bring the Boingo humans into my house without having to buy extra drink coasters.

Yeti Voom and I are kept very busy these days balancing RL work and this whole Boingo thing... I'm happy to have a place where she and I can converse with the growing Boingo community. Mindshare is like gold to me. Nothing I do comes without influence from others.

So, as Jesus once said, "Yea... cool. Let's go."
